LAKE EFFECT DANCE
It’s that time of year again……RECITAL!!!!! We are proud to announce this year’s recital is “MOVE.” In order for our rehearsal and recital to run smoothly, it is necessary for all involved to be familiar with our policies. Most questions should be answered in the following pages, but if there are any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Recital time can sometimes be overwhelming, especially for 1st time dancers and parents. We at Lake Effect Dance are trying everyway to improve what we have done in past years to ensure that our recitals are a positive experience for everyone. Thank-you so much for your overwhelming support throughout the past year and your continued support in the upcoming month.

Each family receives 2 complimentary tickets per recital show (2 tickets for Saturday’s performance and 2 tickets for Sunday’s performance per family). Recital T-Shirts/Sweatshirts:
Every year we offer dancers the opportunity to pre-order a souvenir recital t-shirt. This year the shirt will feature a cast list with all of the student’s names on the back along with our recital themed artwork on the front. Costs of shirts are $12.00/ sweatshirts are $25.00 for sizes Child XS to Adult XL. Anything larger than an Adult XL will come with an additional cost. Pre-ordering is highly recommended, as we only carry a few extra at the recital. (Ask to see the screen imprints – shirts are Black with a multi colored print)
This year we are also selling Lake Effect Black Dance Leggings with the Logo Name printed on the calf of the pant leg. Cost will be $25.00 a pair and come in Child Small to Adult XL. We do not have a print to show but will have some leggings ready to see within a week.
Flowers/Bouquets:
Once again this year we have enlisted the experts at Forever Marge’s Floral in Lake Nebagamon to sell flowers at the recital for your convenience. They do a great job and will have flowers available at BOTH performances for purchase. I should know in a couple of weeks how much bouquets will be – past prices have been $10.00/per bouquet.
Dressing Rooms:
During Dress Rehearsal ONLY we ask that you the parent/guardian help your dancer change for each dance in their assigned area of the adjoining gymnasium.
However, DURING RECITAL NO PARENTS are allowed backstage or in the adjoining
gym to help dress or change your dancer. There will be helpers backstage making sure the show is running smoothly, costume changes are being made on time, and that the dancers are safe, ready, and accounted for. For Beginner Combo Classes – we try to put all the performances in the 1st half of the show and once they have performed ONLY these classes are allowed into the audience to sit on your lap and watch the show until it is time to bring them back up on stage for the finale.
Sorry, Dads/Male Guardians are not permitted in the adjoining gymnasium due to dancers dressing and changing costumes. Our dressing room attendants are responsible for making sure that each dancer is in appropriate costume, matching accessories, hair, tights, and shoes.
If you, a parent, truly want to help out in the dressing area please contact Anna at anna@lakeeffectdance.com or 218-343-9230. If you would like to volunteer for one performance and not another that can be arranged also. Keep in mind you are helping a group of students and not just your own dancer.
Auditorium Rules:
Seating in the Auditorium is general seating. Doors will open to the public 30 minutes prior to each show. If you need handicap assistance, please contact Anna or Holly prior to rehearsal for special seating needs. No food, drinks, candy, or gum will be permitted in the auditorium during rehearsal or at the performances (per Maple School District Policy). We are fortunate to be in such a beautiful facility, please be considerate guests and respect the building as such. Please supervise all children – no running in the auditorium or commons area. No one is permitted backstage except studio staff, performers, and dressing room attendants. Please be respectful and follow our policy of NO VIDEOTAPING AT THE PERFORMANCES – this includes NO CELL PHONE VIDEO TAPING also! You may videotape at dress rehearsal and you can take photos at dress rehearsal (ABSOLUTELY NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY AT PERFORMACES or DRESS REHEARSAL please – for the safety of our dancers!) The “no video policy” protects our choreography and other copyrights and there will be no exceptions!!
***Audience members are asked not to enter or leave the Auditorium when dancers are on stage performing. We will have an auditorium monitor that will let you know when the appropriate time to return to your seat is. Please be considerate and leave or return to your seats in between numbers.
DVD:
DVD of the performances will be available for purchase at both recitals. We will once again be using multiple cameras to create another great artistic video. We will be including backstage footage for the dancers, preparations and commentary from our staff to capture the excitement of the day and allow the performers to relive the moment. Order forms will be available from Holly and at the recital.
Costumes, Hair, and Makeup:
We spend many hours (and this year – weeks) determining the correct costumes for each class. Our staff does a remarkable job to make sure that all costumes are age-appropriate and fit the theme of the dance choreography.
Costume Care:
We recommend that each dancer’s name be placed on his/her costumes, shoes, accessories, and tights. Every year we have misplaced items that if marked with a name can be easily returned to the owner. Place the costumes in the bag that was provided or your own garment bag with your child’s name on the outside. Pack accessories in a clear plastic bag with your child’s name on it and on each item if possible. Press all costumes prior to dress rehearsal and/or the performance. Please do not wash the costumes in your washing machine; if needed dry-clean them only (after recital). Tights that were ordered for each dancer were done so that there are no discrepancies in color and style. The dancers should not wear their tights except for pictures, rehearsal, and the recital. Lake Effect Dance will have extra tights available for purchase should your dancer need them.
****NEVER EAT OR DRINK IN COSTUME!!!*****
Hair and Makeup is not required for dress rehearsal. However, we ask that all female dancers wear makeup at the recital as stage lights wash out the faces. In a perfect world your dancer will have the following – eye shadow, eyeliner, blush, and mascara. For the youngest dancers this can be difficult so at least attempt to use blush. Lipstick can be used but the same color will need to be used by each dancer in a routine. Why Makeup? Lighting on stage washes the dancers faces out and can cast shadows on the face. We want everyone to be seen! All dancers will wear hair pulled up in a ponytail/bun on the top/back of head this year unless otherwise directed by the instructor. We have been enforcing this rule as best we can at practice and every dancer seems to be comfortable and adjusted to their hair up and off the face.
Be Prepared:
Parents – we need you to be really involved in this part. It is each and every dancers responsibility to keep all costumes together and in tact until recital is over! Pre-planning the recital isn’t a one-day activity. Gather all costumes, accessories, shoes, and makeup several days in advance so you will know if something is missing or isn’t right. Make a checklist of your child’s routines, listing their costumes, tights, shoes, and accessories, and keep referring to it to make sure you have all your supplies before going to the auditorium. Bring extra hair gel, bobby pins (especially for the routines with baseball caps, cowboy hats, headbands, veils, etc. – those will need to be pinned down to the hair), and hairspray. Other extra supplies could include:

Baby wipes to fix makeup smudges or wash hands

Baby powder for those itchy costumes

Safety pins for those emergency costume fixes
Clear nail polish to repair minor holes/runs in tight when there isn’t time to change into a new pair
Flesh colored Band Aids (we are forever covering up little ouches)
Dress Rehearsal:
Dress Rehearsal means you wear your costumes!!!!!!!!!!
Saturday, May 30th at 9:00am sharp. Doors will be open at 8:30. Participation in the dress rehearsal is MANDATORY! Any absences will have to be cleared with Anna in advanced. The dress rehearsal allows the dancers to become familiar with the auditorium surroundings and feel comfortable with their performance, costumes, and being onstage – especially the younger 1st time performers. Lighting, music cues, set changes, and all other logistics for an organized performance are rehearsed so that the dancers feel comfortable enough to be able to deliver their best performance ever. We run an organized dress rehearsal and your help with the process will guarantee a professional production. We will run the finale first and will not wait for dancers who are late. We follow a strict rule that we will start on time whether everyone is there or not! Your dancer should arrive in their 1st performance costume ready to go. Makeup is not necessary for dress rehearsal but hair accessories MUST be worn to ensure they stay secure during the performance. All dancers are to meet in the house to hear how the show will run and for any last minute updates. Next you will head to the gymnasium for your assigned area and to check in with your volunteer. Your dancer can stay and watch all performances or are free to go ONLY IF they have has completed their recital routines and are told by Anna or a volunteer with a “CREW” shirt on that they can leave. We will do our best to stay on schedule, but as with any production, there could be a few snags and it is always better to fix them during rehearsal than during the recital show. ***Please keep in mind that rehearsals are just that, A REHEARSAL. There will be glitches, lighting will not be perfect, music could be mixed up, Anna will make mistakes, but that the purpose of the rehearsal is to get the dancer onstage and in their costume and to practice it the way it will be in the show. Please bear with us, remain calm, and most important – bring the positive energy! All dancers will have the opportunity to run through each routine on stage in costume. Once dress rehearsal is over it provides a great time to go home, rest, eat, and get ready for opening night. All costumes can be left in the gymnasium as our staff stays the entire day so everything remains secure.
Dressing Room Etiquette:
Dancers must respect others’ space and property in the dressing room. The dancers will spend more time in the dressing room than onstage, so please do your best to keep it organized and clean. Please pick up your area and do not leave garbage all over for the volunteer to have to clean up. Consideration goes a long way.
Recital:
*Parents/guardians please bring your dancer to the adjoining gymnasium 30 to 45 minutes prior to show time. Saturday, May 30th dancers should arrive between 4:15pm and 4:30pm. Sunday, May 31st dancers should arrive between 1:15pm and 1:30pm. If dancers arrive too early they tend to run and tumble and use all that energy up that we want reserved for the show.
*All dancers will remain in the off stage areas except the Beginner Combo classes who will be permitted to go into the auditorium with their parent/guardian ONLY after they have finished all of their performances. Children will not be allowed to enter the Auditorium without a parent picking them up from the gymnasium and will be called back for the finale. It is not required that they stay for the finale but it is a fun way to end the show.
